  • Why Leiningen Stays

Leiningen chose to stay and fight the ants because he wanted to prove that he was a thinking, sentient being who could overcome “the elements”. His rationalization was that he had already defeated drought, plague and other “acts of God”, and he considered the ants just another obstacle to running a successful plantation. He did not think mere ants could overcome his superior defenses.
