    The ironic twist to the outcome of this story is that at the beginning Leiningen’s main goal is to protect his plantation, but by the end of the story he ends up having to flood and destroy it himself. The reason for him having to do this is because if he did not, the ants would have killed him, and a plantation is of no use to a dead person. In short, he ended up doing the very thing he sought to prevent.
